Blogspot vs WordPress.com, Where your blog should live?

Sometimes, people want to start blogging just for free. And in such circumstances, they look through the massive list of platforms that offer free blogging, available on the web.
And after going through many and many lists, they usually come across the two most popular platforms.

And in most cases, these two platforms are Google Blogger and WordPress.com

So, today I am going to compare Blogspot with WordPress.com. hoping that you'll find this comparison helpful in your choice of the free blogging platforms.
The article will tell you that How much free is blogger then WordPress.com

WordPress.com vs Blogger(Blogspot)

WordPress.com vs Blogger, What are the key deferences, Which one is better WordPress or Blogger

1.) Storage limit

Blogspot.com doesn't have any storage limit for individual blog posts. You can post as many posts as you can.
But individual pages like home and archive pages are limited to 1Mb.
Your photos will be stored on Picasa web. The photos storage limit is capped up to 1GB.
But you can upload about unlimited media because Google has stated that only the photos that are larger than 2048 pixels and videos that are longer than 15minutes will count towards your storage limit.

On the other hand, WordPress.com has a very tight storage limit of 3GB on its free plan. Which is actually not enough for a blog with a good number of posts and media.

2.) Theme/Design Customization

Wordpress.com has much more themes as compared to Blogspot. Although, Blogspot also comes up with some nice and responsive themes but, there aren't as many themes as WordPress.com has.

Both Blogger and WordPress.com allow their users to customize the theme's design but Blogger.com offers much more control to its users allowing them to access and edit HTML and CSS of themes for free, whereas, Wordpress.com charges an annual fee for such advanced customization.

3.) Analytics

Everyone knows about Google's free, full-featured, nice tool for site analytics. The tool is used by many sites on the internet.
Yes, you have guessed right!
The tool is called Google Analytics.

The tool can easily be integrated on Blogger.com, the WordPress.com also has its own analytics tool called Stats.
But the tool is not as good and in-depth as Google Analytics is.
But, Google Analytics actually can't be integrated with the Basic (free) and personal plan of WordPress.com. So you'll have to use Stats on WordPress.com Basic and personal plans.

4.) Bandwidth (amount of data transfer to users)

Both Blogspot and Wordpress.com offer unlimited bandwidth and hence, you can transfer an unlimited amount of data to your users. So, there is no need to worry about bandwidth if you are using either WordPress.com or Blogger.com

5.) Monetization options.

Blogger.com is easy to monetize as compared to WordPress.com's basic and personal plans.
There are several options available if you want to monetize a blogger blog such as affiliate links, Google Adsense and other advertising networks, sponsored posts, etc.

On the other hand, you can monetize your blog on WordPress.com only with affiliate links and sponsored posts(on basic and personal plans). Even on a premium plan, your site can only be monetized with WordAds, not with Google Adsense or any other 3rd party network.

Advertising through a third party is only available on business and e-commerce plans.

6.) Ads on your site!

Unlike Blogspot, WordPress.com will show ads on your site. It means that they will have your site dirty with advertising and you can't stop them from doing this.
Only, what you can do is upgrading to a personal plan and then they'll stop advertising on your site, allowing your visitors to read and visit your site without seeing any advertising.

7.) Connecting your own Custom domain!

Although both blogger and Wordpress.com give you a subdomain of blogspot.com and wordpress.com respectively, sometimes you may need to have a custom domain. So, your web address will become xyz.com instead of xyz.blogspot.com or xyz.wordpress.com

Blogspot allows you to attach your own custom domain with your blog for free. But for connecting a subdomain with your blog you'll have to buy it from a third-party site or from the blogger itself.

On the other hand, WordPress.com also allows you to attach your own subdomain with your blog, but once again it's not free. You'll have to upgrade to personal plan. If, you want to attach your own custom domain.
But if you'll bill annually Wordpress.com will also give you a free domain for one year!

8.) Plugins----to customize your site

Once you have upgraded to the Business or E-commerce plan of WordPress.com you can easily customize your site with plugins. But in Blogspot, there is no such option available. If you want to add popups or social share buttons or anything else you'll have to go to a third party (like elfsight which offers 80+ widgets like WhatsApp chat button, google reviews, etc.) to generate your widget and then put the third party code to your website.

But, in its documentation Blogger (Blogspot) warns authors that add third-party codes to their blog do so at their own risk.

Instead of third party codes, blogger recommends "gadgets". These gadgets are developed by Google and some other developers.
At the time of writing the post, there are only 25 gadgets available.

That means Blogspot will be very limited in functionality as compared to the business and e-commerce plans of WordPress.com.

9.) SSL certificate

SSL certificate is vital for a site's security and it is also one of the Google ranking factors.
Both blogger.com and WordPress.com provides you with a free SSL certificate. So, you don't need to worry about your site's security.

10.) SEO advantage

There always exists a big confusion on the internet with people saying that:
" As blogger is owned by Google, it must have an SEO
an advantage over WordPress".
I think it is nothing more than a myth because Google has a proper algorithm to rank content that doesn't take into account

"Where the site is hosted" "Is the site hosted on Blogspot?" " Is it hosted on WordPress?"

However, It will worth mentioning an article like this where the author says that his 1 post on blogger gets much more traffic as compared to his 50 posts on WordPress!
You can find the post here

We all know very well that Google always tries to deliver quality data to its users.

However, I have found several people on the web telling that they have experienced very fast indexation of their blogs hosted on Blogspot as compared to their blogs hosted on WordPress.
So, faster indexation may also be considered an SEO advantage of blogger.
Although, I am not quite sure about that...

SEO settings...

When comparing Blogspot with WordPress.com, we found that they both are almost equal in SEO and even Blogspot have some more features to boost SEO.

(Learn to SEO Blogspot)

But when we compare Blogspot with the Business plan of WordPress.com then we can see that WordPress.com has many SEO tools and it even allows you to install plugins to improve better look after your SEO.

So, in this way, WordPress.com maybe some more SEO-friendly than Blogspot.

Wrapping it up!

When it comes to Blogspot vs WordPress.com, they both are actually very similar platforms and Blogspot is actually better than WordPress.com in respect of pricing i-e Blogspot offers much more features for free than WordPress.com

Blogger.com can also be very easily integrated with Google products like Google Analytics, Adsense, etc

But WordPress.com also gives you some advantages in its business plan, by allowing you to install plugins.
WordPress.com also has a vast collection of professional themes which Blogspot lacks.

However, a better long-term strategy is to get started with Blogspot.com, and once you have enough amount of traffic then just migrate to Wordpress.org (self-hosted version of WordPress.com).
